Project Explanation
Sight words are the most frequently used words in the English language. There are two reasons that sight words should be given priority when teaching students how to read. Phonetic awareness can't be applied to many of the sight words. Secondly, a majority of the sight words cannot be taught through the use of pictures.
Because fluency is a big part of the foundation of literacy, I have tried to come up with a variety of different techniques and ideas for students to use. The website I created was meant to be something for students to use at home and school to enhance their sight word practice. I also wanted to inform parents about what is expected in kindergarten literacy.
Since some children learn best visually I wanted to try and offer colorful representations that would help reinforce their learning. I chose to include the website Starfall as a unique way to see words in text and not in isolation. Literature based instruction is an important tool that is extremely helpful when teaching students their sight words.
Another way of helping them connect with their sight words is by using games. Screenchomp and cookie crunch are both a fun, hands on way to help strengthen their retention.
Finally, I used Voki's and videos as ways of introducing and demonstrating what my expectations are with each lesson. I tried to keep things as simple as possible so that my students would have an easy time navigating through the site.
My overall goal was to create something that would help my students strengthen their sight word abilities but also help inform parents of what the kindergarten expectations are for the year. Having a strong sight word bank to work from helps students become excellent readers, it is the foundation for beginning reading and is a very important part of the kindergarten curriculum.
