Why We Concentrate On Learning Our Sight Words
During the kindergarten year it is important to provide many opportunities for children to make strong literacy connections. Children learn best when they are interacting with the world around them. Because they are beginning to develop the ability to think and process information about what they see and hear, they are starting to develop beginning learning strategies that will help them read. They can begin to recognize and store in memory basic sight words. Kindergarten children are learning how to focus, process and organize new information each day. Since children are just starting to read between the ages of 5 and 7 they use strategies and skills to put letters and sounds together to begin reading words. By creating an extensive sight word memory bank students will have an easier time reading and creating meaning from text.
